Desktop Graphic

I haven't created too many graphic images before. I have create a variety of documents or projects using various programs, but I usually import clipart from the internet or other sources. I created a fraction, percentage, and decimals worksheet using Microsoft Publisher. I do not have a graphics program on my computer. I could have used the Paint program, Word, or Powerpoint, but I like the tools that are available on Publisher.

I used Publisher to create a fraction, percentage, and decimal that will aid in teaching the relationship between the three. I used the drawing and shapes tool to draw circles that we sectioned using the line drawing tool. I also used the arrow tool. I change the color and format to aid in the presentation. I also added wordart and text. The file is 73.5 KB.

I would like to buy a graphics program that is better than what I have available to me. I plan to do some research to find a program that will enable me to create better graphics. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Snipping Tool

I have Windows XP on my computer not Vista. This made it very hard for me to use the snipping tool that is available on Vista. I could not find an update for Windows that would add the snipping tool, but I did find a website that offered a free snipping tool that I could download onto my computer. I hope this was a safe procedure, but I would several reviews that gave thumbs up on the application. I installed a snipping tool from http://www.bhelpuri.net/Snippy/ that was very easy to use.

I used the snipping tool to cut a section of the FAFSA home page. I find myself very busy in the month of Febraury and March helping my students with their FAFSA applications. I am currently creating a handout that my students will be able to use as a guide when completing
their applications. The snipping tool is much easier to use than the print screen function and cropping out the section I want to use in the handout.

Print Screen

For a long time I could not figure out why I could not get the print screen key to work. I would wait and wait for it to print, but nothing printed. Then I would realize that the print screen button on most programs, except DOS, was really just copying an image of the whole screen and I had to actually import or paste the image in a program where I could print it.

For this assignment, I decided to do a print screen of the Workforce WV homepage. I use this site everyday in my classroom. I have to explain how to navigate this site often, so I hope to eventually create a handout that demonstrates navigate the site. I opened the Workforce WV site on my Firefox browser. I pressed the alt key and the Print Screen key to obtain an image of the screen. I then opened the Paint program that is on my computer and pasted the image into the blank canvas on the Paint program. Once I had the image of the screen on the canvas, I used the cropping tool to cut out the top part of the site. This part of the site is very important when I am giving directions on how to get to the current job lists. Once I had the cropping tool positioned around the area I wanted to cut out, I right clicked on the area and cut that part of the image. I then open a new document in Paint and pasted the area that I had cut into the new canvas. I added a bit of text to show my students that they would need to click on public information. I then made the image as big as the canvas. I saved the Paint file with my new cropped image as a BMP file to my picture folder. I wasn't sure if I should save it in BMP or JPEG. It automatically name it a BMP file when I saved it, so I decided to leave it as that. The file is 1.67 MB. I am very unfamiliar with file sizes, so I need to investigate to see if that is a large file. I uploaded my file to Google Docs so that it could be accessed by others and to me no matter what computer I am using.

Delicious Account

I am really excited about my Delicious account. I use many different websites with my students. Sometimes I have a hard time remembering all of the URLs and some of them are odd. This will give me a great way to bookmark everything where I can obtain it from my four classrooms and the various places I have to meet with students. I am going to try to start using this with my students so that they can access the different websites they may need for SPOKES class.

Ideas of Class Projects

I am going to try to create all my projects for this class on the subject of job readiness skills (resume writing, interview skills, job retention, civil service, FAFSA, college information). I am a career development consultant and teach job readiness skills everyday. I hope to be able to use most of what I do in this class in my classroom.

Introduction

My name is Charity Sypolt. I live in Buckhannon, WV with my husband and our dog. I have a BA in K-8 Multi-Subject Elementary Education. I was a substitute teacher for several years and also taught full-time for several years. I have taught pretty much every grade including adult education classes. I am currently employed as a career development consultant for an adult learning program called SPOKES. I serve adult students in six counties (Upshur, Lewis, Tucker, Randolph, Braxton, and Webster). I travel almost every day of the week. I love my job, but really miss teaching children. I am currently in the reading specialist program at FSU. I hope to graduate in the next two years and eventually go back to teaching children. I am looking forward to learning a lot this semester and gaining knowledge that I can use with my current and future students.
